During the Meiji Period, some judoka travelled to America with the goal of spreading Judo.
Among them was a man called Mitsuyo Maeda, who was 26 at the time.
He travelled to America as an ambassador of Judo. After this he also wandered to other locations in the world and picked up different martial art styles from places such as England, Spain and Mexico.
It was said that Maeda's style of fighting was to clinch with his opponent, drop them to the mat and finish them with a joint lock or choke.
Maeda was able to empower Japanese immigrants who lived outside of Japan with his show of constant bravery when fighting against foreigners who were often bigger and stronger.
Near the end of his life, Maeda travelled to Brazil to help with the cultivation of the Amazon.
In 1913, Maeda met an influential man living in Belem called Gastaon Gracie.
Gastaon asked Maeda to train his unruly sons in the art of Judo.
Maeda began by teaching Judo to Carlosn Gastaon's son.

Helio Gracie, the youngest son of Gastaon Gracie and Carlos's younger brother, was physically weak and was not good at physical exercise.
Helio who at the time did not seem to be deeply involved with Jiu-jitsu was said to always watch his brother teaching the art.
Then one day, in his brother's absence, he taught the class and became very popular with the students.
In order for Helio to use Jiu-jitsu, he adapted it so that even as weak as he was, he could use the techniques.
(At this time, the difference between Judo and jiu-jitsu was very vague. A theory is that both arts began to spread as "Jiu-jitsu" in Brazil.)
To allow Gracie Jiu-jitsu to gain a foothold in the Brazilian martial arts world, it became necessary for it to triumph over Vale Tudo which is a form of Brazilian MMA.
Helo Gracie challenged Vale Tudo and was able to successfully show the superiority of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was said to have been formed from Judo. However, you will see from actually doing it that it is a totally different sport.
This is due to the difference in the rules. All sports are molded by their rules.
It is generally said that the rules of Judo are strict and those of Jiu-jitsu are relaxed.
For example, there are rules for a time-out (break or matte), rules during ground fighting (newaza), rules for point evaluation and conditions for determining the winner of a match.
Judo emphasizes throwing techniques with the decision in the hands of the referee. However, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu places emphasis on positions during ground fighting and the match can be determined with a tap from the opponent during a choke or joint lock.
Some people might get the impression that Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is quite a hard sport but it is in fact quite the opposite.
It is very logical and by learning refined BJJ, the Judoka can quite suprisingly improve and develop their newaza easily.
It might be said that Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is an intellectual man's martial art because of the necessity to always use your brain during the techniques.
I have in fact seen a number of cases in which a person over 30 year old with no experience of Judo or wrestling started Jiu-jitsu and became tough and strong while enjoying the aspects of the sport.
